The Winds of War
An engaging story of the lead-up to World War II. This volume starts in 1939 and ends with the attack on Pearl Harbor. The second volume, War and Remembrance, describes the war itself.
The story is told through the eyes of the fictional Henry and Jastrow families, which makes it an enjoyable novel as well as a window into a pivotal time in the creation of the modern world.
An incredibly ambitious work, the two-part series paints a sweeping picture of World War II, from Europe to the Pacific. Wouk spent 14 years writing the two volumes. They were later turned into two excellent ABC miniseries, starting in 1983.
